Library Research: Using Scholarly Sources

In this badge students will learn to ethically access, evaluate and use information sources to accomplish a specific purpose such as preparation of a research paper or project in order to prepare for college-level research.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the badge, students will be able to:

  • Create a complex search query to locate peer-reviewed, scholarly articles
  • Create an annotated bibliography in MLA 8th edition style
  • Become familiarized with the ethical and legal issues of information 

Credit Hours
Success in this 0.5 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of 7.5 hours over the length of the course in direct instruction as provided by the instructor and an additional 15 hours outside of class reading, reflecting, and evaluating the topics for a total of 22.5 hours.

Grading Scale: Badge/No Badge

Evaluation: 100% completion of badge criteria

As the Instruction and Outreach Librarian at University Libraries, one of my primary responsibilities is teaching LASI 170. I also work with most student groups not affiliated with a college, i.e. TRIO programs and International Education Office as well as area K-12 groups as crucial outreach duties. (It is mostly juniors and seniors in high school who come to do research, but 4-H clubs and elementary classes that come here for library tours are extra fun!)

You will also find me working several hours weekly at the Reference Desk, including some evening and weekend hours, so I hope I am easy for you to reach if you have questions about this class or other research projects. As a K-12 school librarian, I taught various study skills, including reading textbooks, writing class notes and taking tests.
