Laurie Alloway is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department at Wichita State University. Her educational background includes Bachelor degrees in Biology and Medial Laboratory Sciences from Newman University and Wichita State University, and a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences from Friends University. She is a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist and certified Specialist in Chemistry by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She has worked in the field of laboratory medicine for over 25 years. She joined the WSU College of Health Professions in 2012. In addition to teaching the Medical Terminology badge courses, she also teaches Clinical Chemistry, Advanced Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Clinical Biochemistry, Laboratory Management, The Impact of Disease on Global Events, and MLS: Healthcare Detectives. Laurie is also an EMT with the State of Kansas and an American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor.
Medical Terminology: The Nervous System and Senses
This 0.5 credit hour medical terminology course covers material over the nervous system and the special senses of the eyes and ears. Included in this course are the structure and function, pathology, diagnostic and treatment procedures, and abbreviations related to these systems. It emphasizes accurate interpretations and analysis of patient, hospital, and other medical records.
Prerequisite: The prerequisite for this course is HP 303 BA: Introduction to Medical Terminology Badge.
Over the course of the semester, HP 303 BD students should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Identify words and word parts used in medical terminology
- Define words and common word roots, prefixes, and suffixes used in medical terminology
- Recognize the importance of spelling medical terms correctly
- Apply medical terms to specific situations in the medical setting
Successful completion of this badge is awarded 0.5 online hours of credit. Workload for completion is based on the expectation that students will spend a minimum of 7.5 hours in instruction over the length of the badge and an additional 15 hours on preparation, readings, studying, writing, research and other assignments as determined by the badge instructor. 2 Activities will involve working online, participating in asynchronous activities, and other offline work.
