This course focuses on providing comprehensive, person-centered care to aging adults. Participants will learn about the principles of aging adult centered care, including respect for autonomy, dignity, and individual preferences. The course will cover topics such as effective communication, cultural competence, ethical considerations, and strategies for promoting independence and quality of life.

Course Objectives

Through the format and content of this Badge, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to adapt to the specific needs of an aging adult.
2. Evaluate ways to have a positive attitude towards residents and coworkers.
3. Examine methods for practicing self-care.
4. Demonstrate empathy for aging adults and their caregivers and communities.
5. Describe how to prioritize privacy and independence when caring for an aging adult. (Dignity LO)
6. Demonstrate how to empower residents with choice & autonomy. (Dignity LO)
7. Explore how to respect residents’ priorities and rights. (Dignity LO)

Credit Hours

Successful completion of this Badge is awarded 0.5 online hour of credit. Workload for completion is based on the expectation that students will spend a minimum of 7.5 hours in instruction over the length of the Badge and an additional 15 hours on preparation, reading, studying, writing, research and other assignments as determined by the Badge instructor. Activities will involve working online, participating in asynchronous activities, and other offline work.

Jacie Green, MA

Jacie Green earned a masters degree in Aging Studies from Wichita State University. She is honored to share her passion for older adults, online learning and teaching, and strives to improve knowledge and attitudes towards the older population through her work as a graduate advisor and educator. Jacie also serves as the graduate coordinator for both the Aging Studies and Health Administration graduate programs. She enjoys connecting with and helping students realize their true potential for their chosen profession.

Prior to this position, Jacie was a graduate student in the Aging Studies program at WSU and enjoyed her time as a SilverSneakers instructor for the ElDorado YMCA.
