Psycho-pharmacotherapy is adjunct to already established therapies. Drug selection should be based on the best available evidence (FDA approved indications), best practice standards for that drug, and a careful risk -benefit analysis. This course will equip students to engage in multidisciplinary teams and effectively monitor psychopharmacology interventions prescribed to their clients.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the badge students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the need for a thorough past and current medical history; medical, neurological, mental status examination, baseline laboratory studies and neuro-diagnostic testing when appropriate.
  2. Articulate the best practices for effective drug monitoring and the elements of side effects assessment.
  3. Identify members of the treatment team and best practices for team reviews in relation to pharmacology and compliance with ICF-MR regulations.
  4. Ability to demonstrate timely and comprehensive documentation to communicate dealing with adverse medication side effects or medical emergencies.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of lifespan and development as related to the use of psychopharmacological intervention.

Credit Hours

Success in this 0.5 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of 7.5 hours over the length of the course in direct instruction as provided by the instructor and an additional 15 hours outside of class reading, reflecting, and evaluating the topics for a total of 22.5 hours.
