Care of Populations: Public Health Sciences

This badge introduces students to the tools of public health. Students will explore the history of the U.S. Public Health system and learn how public health practitioners integrate core competencies, essential services, and retrieval of evidence for the goal of improving the health of populations.

Course Objectives:

A student who completes this badge can:
1. Describe the core functions and essential services of public health practice
2. Identify prominent events in the history of public health
3. Describe the delivery of the 10 essential public health services
4. Search community health data
5. Assess population health outcomes

Credit Hours
Success in this 0.5 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of 7.5 hours over the length of the course in direct instruction as provided by the instructor and an additional 15 hours outside of class reading, reflecting, and evaluating the topics for a total of 22.5 hours.

Amy Drassen Ham, PhD, MPH

Amy Drassen Ham

Dr. Drassen Ham is a medical anthropologist with research interest in culturally-informed care. She has Master’s degrees in Anthropology and Public Health and received her PhD from the University of Kansas. Dr. Drassen Ham’s research and work examines how providers use cultural competency education in clinical and other health services. She is focusing on evaluating and rethinking standard educational approaches to clinical cultural competency and better positioning person-centeredness in health services education. She teaches cultural competency, epidemiology, and community development methods and speaks locally and nationally about challenges in cultural competency education. She is a Fellow in the Society for Applied Anthropology, a Tilford Diversity Commission Fellow, and a Wichita State University Online Faculty Fellow. Dr. Drassen Ham received the WSU Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009 and the Rodenberg Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2015.
